Fall Bright, The Winemakers Shoppe, 10110 Hyatt Hill, Dundee, NY 14837 Shortages 2005 harvest I have tried to target some of our popular wines (woops juices) and I had to be cautious as some varieties were still in short supply during the 2005 harvest. Chambourcin is a red variety that we introduced several years ago. It is a late ripening French Hybrid that tends to have a higher acid with moderate sugars. It is a big robust wine that benefits from oak and aging. It has excellent color as a juice and as a grape. Though our grapes are gone, we still have a fair bit of Chambourcin juice available. If you want to ferment on the skins, we have bags of frozen skins! If you are interested, call. We will make arrangements to be open weekends by request. * The following figures are from the coop extension regarding crop loss in NYS. These are high demand varieties and small wineries will be allowed to purchase them from other states. * Riesling - 44 percent loss statewide, Merlot - 55 percent loss statewide Pinot Noir - 51 percent loss statewide, Cabernet Franc - 50 percent loss statewide We had very high quality grapes this year and were fortunate to have about 40% of a crop of Riesling and Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir was very short this year as we lost an entire block. It will be 3-4 years to recovery. Other varieties not mentioned above that were short on our farm this year were Niagara, Delaware, Baco, Chelois, Gewürztraminer and Muscot Ottonel. Hopefully we will have a moderate winter and can continue to recover in the vineyard. Thank you for your business and interest in winemaking. May your wines fall bright! |
