Finger Lakes Wine Trails

A new winemaker may not have a handle on what he would really like to make. He is familiar with some varieties but when he looks at our list of 30 varieties, he may be a little lost. If you live near one of the wine trails here in the Finger Lakes, you have a perfect opportunity to taste varieties such as Cayuga, Seyval, Vidal, and of course the traditional viniferas plus the red hybrids that are very popular in the area like Foch.

The actual Finger Lakes viticulture area is centered around four main lakes with American Indian names: Canandaigua (meaning The Chosen Place), Keuka (Crooked Lake), Seneca, and Cayuga.  Wineries around Keuka, Seneca and Cayuga and Canandaigua Lakes have organized "wine trails" with their own brochures, special events, and other activities to conveniently welcome visitors.

"Cayuga Lake is also recognized as a separate viticulture area within the Finger Lakes region, due to its unique geographical conditions for growing grapes. So starting with your area (Cayuga Lake) here is some information to start you on a tasting of varieties. Not all the wineries on any given lake are members of the trail, however, stop in anyway!
