An email regarding Cayuga........
I opened my last bottle of Fall Bright’s Cayuga 2005 for a “white wine” friend of my wife Sat night. We had it with some soft cheese, no tomato, Bruchetta appetizer, and then Chicken Marsala. The Cayuga was delicious—balanced, fruity (pear-ish), crisp. Last Spring that wine won the Gold Medal at the Mohawk Valley Amateur Winemakers competition in Herkimer. It’s a small competition—probably 20 winemakers, 50 wines but only 3 medals are given in the entire competition. Cayuga won against some experienced, 3 rd generation, mainly Italian, winemakers who use California grapes. I was pleased. In addition, Fall Bright’s NY 73.136.17 (Noiret), 2004, did earn a Silver Medal at the American Wine Society in November, 2006. It is young, and even though I really like it, I thought it might be a little too dry/astringent/tannic, but the judges thought it was pretty good. I still think the role of NY 73..... will be as a blender—the black pepper turning Chambourcin or Chancellor into Shiraz. I’ve been topping up all my red hybrids with NY 73.... this year and last. At the very least it should add some complexity. dde |
