Dear Winemakers,
The following was penned by Gary Cox, winemaker, grape grower, historian with the York Historical Society in Piffard, NY. He sent me this piece of wine history that I felt would be of interest to my readers. The image below is the mentioned ad from 1836. http://www.yorkhistorical.org/Warren/default.asp This page announces the purchase of the Warren House in 2006. The wine events on that page were in 2006. The York Historical Society is hosting a fund raising wine tasting. Read Gary's announcement below.
Back to Fall Bright, our catalogs were mailed last week, August 15-16. The 2007 grape and juice list is current online. If you don't get your catalog by early this week, let
us know and we will get one out. May your wines fall bright! Marcy
HERITAGE WINE TASTING This is an invitation to participate in an extraordinary wine tasting on Saturday, September 22, 2007 from 3:00 until 5:30 pm, at Hillcrest, 1940 Craig Rd., in the Town of York, Piffard, NY. This Heritage Wine Tasting is the year's main fund-raiser for the Town of York Historical Society. September
marks the first anniversary of the Town of York Historical Society’s purchase of this truly historic 1830’s Warren homestead and winery site in York as the Historical Society's new home! Second, and of more immediate interest: Our Heritage Wine Tasting will be an interestingly unique experience. It will feature award-winning 21st century Finger Lakes wines including some exceptional dessert wines made from 19th century American grape varieties that were grown and vinified by the Warrens in York. Participating Finger Lakes wineries are Arbor Hill, Barrington Cellars, Bellwether Hard Cider, Deer Run Winery, Eagle Crest Vineyards, Goose Watch Winery, Montezuma Winery, and Swedish Hill Winery. Carefully chosen hors d'oeuvres will accompany the wines. Jim Kimball's string band from SUNY Geneseo will play music of the York Wines era. An official of the New York Wine and Grape Foundation will speak; a major media announcement will occur. A commemorative wine glass and booklet, both included in the ticket price, will enhance your experience. Our Heritage Wine Tasting will be interestingly unique for what it will help to bring about during the coming year. The York Historical Society wants to restore and to develop its landmark site – now a hidden treasure - to make it a very attractive destination for visitors. For example, we hope to put in place a parking area and a long, brick-paved, Historic Grape Walk (arbor/pergola), planted with 19th century American grapevines, and featuring tasteful, historically informative signage. Your participation in the Heritage Wine Tasting will help us achieve this goal. So, when you walk the Warren Walk, you'll know that you've given our small, all-volunteer society a big helping hand toward increasing the attractiveness of our area for local folks as well as for visitors. There will be only 100 tickets, and some have already been sold. I hope you'll decide to participate. To reserve please call 1 (800) 217 – 4234 or (585) 243 – 3912. Please send your check, payable to York Historical Society, to Town of York Historical Society, 2431 Dow Road, Piffard, NY 14533. A pair of tickets is only $75.00, of which $50 is a tax-deductible contribution and single tickets are $40. A commemorative wine glass and booklet is included. Cordially yours, Gary Cox, Vice President, Town of York Historical Society
If you want to be removed from my list, just reply and let me know! Thank you.
