Filtering tips: Muddy looking wines should not be filtered, rather they should be clarified with proper fining. Check the brix, TA and pH. Make necessary adjustments and additions such as SO2 and Sorbate. Fine and cold stabilize prior to filtration.

Buon Vino MINI JET

MiniJet.gif (41886 bytes)

Caution:  As with any new and dry priming pump, pour some water into the intake hose before flipping the switch.    Do not run dry, nor run while switching between carboys, as that increases oxidation of the wine.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE BUON VINO MINI JET FILTER

A. The #1 filter pads are coarse pads, used mainly for heavy wines. These pads will produce minimal clarity for your wine. They are used as a first filtration to extract the larger suspended particles.

B. The #2 pads are finer and are used for brightening and polishing your wine. You should notice a brightness and clarity. These pads remove smaller suspended particles and are used for your second filtration.

C. If you prefer to further enhance your wine or if you plan on bottling, use #3 pads. These pads should only be used if your wine has been filtered with the #2 pads at least once. The #3 pads assist in removing a higher percentage of yeast in the wine.

NOTE: One set of pads will effectively filter 23 liters (5 gallons) of wine. Remove and replace the pads with a new set after filtering this quantity of wine

NOTE: Once you have started filtering DO NOT filter more than 10 gallons or 50 liters of wine at a time. If you have additional wine to be filtered you MUST allow the motor to cool for 45 minutes to 1 hour before further filtering.

IMPORTANT: Do not allow the pump to run dry.

MOTOR DIRECTIONS

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

จจPrior to filtering, wine should have been racked 1 – 2 times into a new container.

1. Remove the pads from the package and place them in a clean container with enough fresh water to cover the pads and allow them to soak (approx. 5 minutes). Make sure pads are not bunched together while soaking allowing water to saturate both side of the 3 pads.

2. Attach the small diameter piece of hose supplied to the fitting located under the drip tray (“A” on diagram). This same hose is used for racking with and cleaning your pump.

3. Loosen the two black hand wheels and remove the two central plates.

4. Remove the pads form the water and insert one pad into the filter body. The coarse side will be facing the hand wheels and the holes will be aligned. See diagram. Make sure to press down on the pad so that both sides of the T are sitting on the two side bolts and the pad is straight along the top.

5. Next place one of the central filtering plates, insert the second pad and the next plate in the same manner, followed by the last pad. Once the pads and the plates are inserted all the pads and plates should be even along the top.

NOTE: The pads are cut in a “T” formation with one side of the “T” higher than the other. The hooks on both sides of the filter plates also have the same offset. This allows you to insert the pads and plates properly.

6. Tighten the hand wheels to ensure a tight seal on the pads.

7. Insert the intake hose, which contains a stainless steel wire and a red sediment tip to the inlet on the pump (B on the diagram).

8. Attach the long slightly larger diameter, out-take tube to the outlet port (C) and the small tube attached to (A) the drip tray.

9. Place the intake tube into the wine to be filtered. Next place your out-take tube a small container to catch the first bottle of wine that has been watered down from the water in the pads. Then into your wine container for filtered wine. Place the tube attached to the drip tray into a separate container until the water from the pads is out and then into a separate one to re-filter this wine at the end or into the filtered wine jug. (Depending on the wine, we generally forfeit or drink 750 ml of watered wine.)

10. If your pump is initially dry, prime by forcing some wine using the intake tube into the pump.

11. DO NOT run the pump if dry.

12.  Plug in the cord and turn on the switch located at the rear of the unit.

13. Upon completion of filtration, CLEAN the pump, see below.

CLEANING AND USING THIS PUMP

FOR RACKING BYPASSING THE PADS

1. Remove the short tube that had been placed on the fitting under the drip tray. Disconnect the short tube which leads from the pump to your first filtering plate and attach the drip tray tube to the outlet portion of the pump, leaving your intake tube connected tot your pump. You now have a direct line through your pump, bypassing the filter plates.

2. Pump clean cold water through your pump. Place your intake tube into approximately 3 gallons of clean water and your out-take tube into an empty container. Turn on the pump and flush.

3.  Unplug the motor.

4. Remove your filtering plates and hoses and clean. When cleaning the drip tray be VERY CAREFUL not to get the motor wet.

5. On occasion place some petroleum jelly on the threaded portion of the two side bolts, keeping them lubricated.
