A TWO GENERATION HISTORY OF THIS BREEDING

In 1995 a female pup was purchased - Gordon`Ach Shadow Dancer CERF (Genie) of the Dam FC Remington Steele (Lexy) and Sired by NFC, NAFC, FC, AFC Pal Joey OFA good (Joey) - winner of the coveted Gordon Setter Club of America (GSCA) Gun Dog of the year 4 years in a row.

Genie was a very special bitch – incredibly intelligent, finely chiseled and very well built, though small @ 37 lb.  She carried herself in a stately, proud manner and would turn heads when she merely walked at heel.  Genie’s PennHip exam placed her in the upper half of the breed.  She was a wonderful bird dog, with pheasants and prairie grouse being her specialties.  Genie was an alpha female and an unbelievably loyal companion who just beamed when given attention.

In early December of 2000 Genie was bred to NAFC, FC, AFC Gunsmoke Rising OFA Good AKC DNA#V68257  (Smokey).  Smokey won the GSCA Gun Dog of the year 3 times, won the Tri-Setter Classic 3 times and won the Ohio Bird Dog Association Gun Dog of the Year- All Breeds.

8-Feb-01 a litter of 9 pups was whelped, 2 males and 7 females.  Two of the best prospects were retained:

  • A male Keuka’s Parker Brother PennHip 90th percentile of the breed, OFA Excellent, CERF (Parker) intense retrieving desire and ability.
  • A female Keuka’s Boss & Company PennHip 80th percentile of the breed, OFA Good, CERF (Queen)

Queen is classy and very stylish.  See her 12 wk old pictures.  She was reserved to go to a person who hunted birds more than 30 days a year.  Queen went to Oklahoma at 15 months of age as a started dog, where ~150 quail were shot over her in her second bird season before she was 2 yr. old. – Too make a long story short I regained possession of Queen in August of 2003.

Our goal with every breeding is to strive and improve the quality of our dogs and the Gordon Setter breed.

  • First and foremost the dogs must be physically and mentally sound.
  • They must be compatible with humans and other dogs
  • They must be possessed of a strong desire to hunt
  • They must be gifted with the instincts and abilities that will allow them to accomplish the above.

We have chosen to use bitches from outstanding dogs of the breed.  Where possible we will go back to especially notable dogs to concentrate their genetic contributions in our breeding plan.

Pal Joey is one of the outstanding Gordon Setters of the last 20 years.  Joey sired Queen’s dam and we have chosen to breed him back to his grand daughter (Queen) to hopefully intensify the abilities of this litter.

The acid test of any breeding is to place the progeny with people, who are able to and will through proper training, campaigning and/or hunting let the dogs develop to their full potential.  If the pups show great promise as they mature we shall repeat this breeding in the future, if possible, in hopes of putting some very good brood bitches into the breed.
