To Start winemaking, you'll
need.
- Books, information.
- Carboys. You'll always need an
empty one for racking.
- Bung to fit (#6-#7) and an
- airlock
- Siphon hose and
racking tube for racking.
- bottle filler for the end process of filling bottles. Attaches to
end of siphon tubing. This fills from the bottom up, displacing enough
wine for corking when removed.
- Hydrometer (triple scale: potential alcohol, Brix, specific gravity) to
test the sugar level BEFORE
fermentation.
- Corn sugar (Dextrose) to adjust "Brix" or sugar.
- Yeast: Your pick, our recommendation. 1 pack per 5-7 gallons.
- Potassium Metabisulfite: an anti-oxidant and anti bacterial
additive. Recommended rate of 40 to 80 ppm, the lesser amount for red
as it has bleaching characteristics. This is added at
racking. It can also be used for cleaning and chasing chlorine rinses.
- OR Campden Tablets are a tablet form of Sodium or Potassium bisulfite for use in small
lots. One tablet is (rate varies) 30 to 120 ppm in 1 gallon.
Check the label
- +5-5 Hydrometer to check sugar at the end of fermentation. A
negative 2 reading is dry, dry, dry. A positive 1degree reading has
some sugar left and is not safe to bottle unless Sorbate (in combination
with Potassium Metabisulfite) is going to be used. See
Bottling Sweet Wine (Sorbate) Lesson page.
Brewing
- Bucket, pail, open fermenter with lid and airlock
- most of the above.
